The Act With Love (AWL) art collective collaborated with illustrator Jade Sarson (winner of Myriad Editions First Graphic Novel competition with For the Love of God, Marie!) to visualise the research of Dr Oli Williams (King’s College London) which explores the social determinants of health and obesity. They created an evidence-based comic that tells the story of how stigma associated with bodyweight and size gets under the skin and is felt in the flesh. The Weight of Expectation comic debuted at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and is now being used in health education programmes and health services around the world to support the delivery of weight-neutral care. More information about the comic is available here.
In recognition of this work, the British Science Association invited Oli to deliver the Margaret Mead Award Lecture for Social Sciences at the British Science Festival 2018. He has also spoken about his research and The Weight of Expectation comic project with nutritionist and wellness advocate Laura Thomas on the Don’t Salt My Game podcast which can be downloaded for free on iTunes and is also available here. If you would like more information about the comic and the research it is informed by please feel free to contact Oli via e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Twitter (@OliWilliamsPhD).
